Everything about Video Time
Overview
A real Moodle activity for video
Video Time is a course activity for video. It plays Vimeo and YouTube videos as well as video and audio files uploaded directly to the course. With Pro, tracking, reporting and completion conditions help you meet compliance requirements.
Learners get a player with tabs, resume where they stopped and move on to the next activity. With Premium, teachers choose videos from a repository with filters, tags and search instead of pasting embed codes.

Vimeo and YouTube videos, uploaded video or audio files and external sources.
New in 1.10: local chapters and transcripts in the VideoJS player.
Any public or private Vimeo video plays with full playback features. Locally hosted or external videos play in the open-source VideoJS player, which now also supports local chapters and transcripts.
Drag a video file into the course to create a configured activity.
Drop a video file onto the course page and Video Time creates a fully configured activity from it.
A standard activity link; custom text above and below the player.
The player embedded directly on the course page, with controls and tabs.
Embeds the video player directly on the course page, including player controls and tabs.
A preview image on the course page that opens the activity.
New in 1.10: previously Vimeo only, now also for VideoJS.
Shows a thumbnail on the course page instead of a link, optionally with title, description, tags, duration and viewed progress, in one to four columns. Duration and preview image settings are currently Vimeo only.
Choose videos inside Moodle instead of pasting embed codes.
Browse and search videos directly in the activity settings. Filters, previews, metadata import and one shared account for all editors work with a connected Vimeo account. Locally stored videos need Media Time.
Watch, Information, Blocks, Related activities and Chat tabs.
Watch: the video alone, without distractions. Information: extra content such as speaker bios. Blocks: any Moodle block, e.g. comments. Related activities: the other activities in the same section. Chat: a live chat for participants, which needs the Deft Response block. Administrators choose which tabs are available and in which order; tab names can be customised.
A Chapters tab with chapters from Vimeo or added locally.
New in 1.10: local chapter files (VTT), editable in Video Time.
Shows the chapters configured in Vimeo, or chapters added locally as text tracks.
An interactive, searchable transcript in its own tab.
New in 1.10: upload your own VTT files, in several languages, and edit them in Video Time.
Shows the transcript configured in Vimeo, or a local transcript that you upload or edit directly in Video Time.
Complete when the player is started, or marked as done manually.
On view time, watch percentage, video finished or grade.
Completion on view time (minimum seconds), on watch percentage, on watching the entire video, or on receiving a grade — any grade or a passing grade. Completion details can be hidden from students.
Watch time, progress, position and playback events per user.
No fast-forwarding; playback continues from the last position.
A next activity button, optionally going on automatically when the video ends.
Adds a button above the video that leads to the next activity — the default one or one you select. Optionally learners move on automatically as soon as the video ends.
Watch percentage transferred into Moodle's gradebook.
Course activity report, session report and custom reports.
New in 1.10: covered time and visual progress shading in the course activity report; new session report.
Aggregated watch data per activity in the course reports, a detailed session report per learner, and a report source for Moodle's report builder.
Titles, descriptions and transcripts found through Moodle's global search.
New in 1.10: now also for VideoJS; results link to the exact moment in the video.
Videos play directly in the official Moodle app.
Watch data is covered by Moodle's privacy API; embed activities elsewhere with a filter.
Live streams in the course, with tracking and a switch to the recording afterwards.
Embed live streams directly in a Video Time activity. With Vimeo live events, the activity shows the event details and switches to the recording automatically once the stream ends. Streams from other providers are supported too; the link to the recording may then have to be changed manually.
Named participants of the live session, stored in Moodle.
A chat tab next to the video, plus live polls and audio chats.
With the Deft Response block installed and configured, the Chat tab shows a live chat for everyone with access to the activity. Live polls and audio chats add interaction to the video.
Use Video Time inside a Content Designer activity.
Video Time can be used within a Content Designer activity.
Show video progress in the Designer course format.
Display videos in a modal instead of a separate page.
Let users rate videos across the site.
Build and share video channels with the Dash block.

Compliance
Compliance training with tracking
Video Time tracks watch time per user, completes the activity on view time, watch percentage or the full video, and can prevent fast-forwarding. Reports can be exported for audits or documentation.
Video learning
Video learning units with interactive transcripts
Long videos get chapters and a searchable transcript. Learners jump to any point with a click and resume where they stopped.
Live events
Track attendance of a live event
Embed a live stream, schedule it with the availability settings and track named participants. With preview tracking prevented, only viewing during the event counts.
Tech & compliance
Running it
Requirements
Moodle 4.4 to 5.2 (Video Time 1.12). Basic runs without any external service.
Installation & updates
Basic, Pro and Premium are installed as described in the installation guide.
Reviewing it
Data protection & hosting
What stays in Moodle and what doesn't. Watch time, completion and analytics are stored in your Moodle database; with Pro and Premium they are covered by Moodle's Privacy API. Videos you upload to Moodle play locally without any external service. If you embed videos from Vimeo or YouTube, the learner's browser loads the player from that platform — just like any embedded video — and the platform receives the usual connection data (e.g. the IP address). For Vimeo you can switch on Do Not Track. The Premium repository connects your Vimeo account to Moodle with your own API credentials; it fetches your video list, metadata and text tracks from Vimeo. No learner data is sent in these requests. The live chat tab uses Deft Response. Video Time carries Moodle's Privacy friendly award.
Accessibility & license
Video Time is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. It supports captions, subtitles, chapters and transcripts via text tracks. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
