Everything about Star Rating
Overview
Feedback where learning happens
Understanding how learners perceive your content is key to continuous improvement. Star Rating collects quantitative and qualitative feedback directly where learning happens: a star rating, optionally with a comment.
Simple shortcodes place rating elements and comment fields anywhere on your Moodle or Totara site — in an activity, a course or a user profile. Star Rating is a filter, so no extra activity or block is needed.

Embed ratings anywhere using simple shortcodes.
Shortcodes work in any text region of Moodle or Totara. With Moodle’s access restrictions, ratings can be tied to milestones such as activity completions or grades. No extra activity or block is needed: Star Rating is a filter.
Works in activity, course and user contexts.
Officially supported in activity, course and user context. Each activity has its own independent rating; sections and blocks in a course share the one course rating.
Show averages, star visuals or participation counts.
Separate shortcodes show the average as a number or as stars, the number of ratings, or the latest comments together with their ratings.
Go beyond stars with integrated comment fields.
New in 1.1: ratings can be supplemented with comments.
A rating with a comment field gives context to the stars. Learners can change their rating at any time.
Prompt for details when ratings are low.
New in 1.1: star-rating thresholds in the global settings trigger a comment prompt or keep comments optional.
Define star values in the global settings that open the comment form automatically — for example 1 and 2, so low ratings come with a reason.
Display and moderate feedback with ease.
New in 1.1: a dedicated filter shows all comments in one place; standard roles and permissions define who can view, write or moderate.
A list shows submitted comments together with their ratings. Standard Moodle roles and permissions define who can read, write, edit or moderate comments site-wide.
Detailed data fields for evaluation in report builder.
New in 1.1: report source for the Moodle/Totara Report Builder with ratings, comments and edit histories.
A Star Rating report source for the Moodle or Totara report builder: rating, raw value, comment, original comment and edit history, the user and editing user, and the context with its name and tags. Native filters and export included.
Define your own rating range.
Set the number of stars for the whole site, up to 25. The setting applies to existing and future ratings and to the report.
Access control through placement, permissions and conditions.
Who can rate, comment or moderate is set with Star Rating’s capabilities and standard Moodle roles. Placement and access restrictions decide where and when a rating appears.

Quality
Content quality assurance
Add a rating to each activity and see in report builder which content is well received and where learners struggle.
Social learning
Peer review
Learners rate and comment in the course; a comment list shows the feedback, and roles decide who may moderate it.
Evaluation
Instant course evaluation
Place a rating at the end of an activity. Low ratings open the comment form automatically, so you learn why.
Tech & compliance
Running it
Requirements
Moodle 4.5 to 5.1 (Star Rating 1.1).
Installation & updates
A filter plugin, installed through the Moodle plugin installer and activated under Filters, as described in the installation guide.

Data protection & hosting
Your data stays in your Moodle. Star Rating runs entirely inside your Moodle site and stores its data in your Moodle database and file storage, on your own server. bdecent does not run a cloud service for it, and the plugin never contacts bdecent: no licence checks, no telemetry, no usage tracking. Access is controlled by Moodle roles and capabilities, so only the people you authorise can see or change it.
Accessibility & license
Star Rating is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
