Union at a glance
Vanilla Moodle under the hood
Union is a child theme of Boost. It behaves exactly like Boost until you switch features on — so your platform stays upgrade-safe while looking like your own.
Everything about Union
Overview
A child theme of Boost, without custom code
Union is a free, open-source child theme of Moodle’s default Boost theme. It adds configuration options for branding, navigation, layout and content directly to the administration panel — no core changes, no fragile CSS hacks, no custom theme development. Under the hood, your platform stays vanilla Moodle.
Union is maintained by Moodle an Hochschulen e.V., ssystems GmbH and Alexander Bias, with contributions from lern.link, Luca Bösch, Christian Wolters and bdecent. bdecent is co-maintainer and maintains the Workplace edition for Moodle Workplace.

A flavour applies its own look to selected course categories or cohorts — useful when departments need their own layout.

Accessibility feedback form and accessibility statement.
A persistent icon on every page opens a feedback form for reporting accessibility issues with course content. An accessibility statement is available from the footer.
Out of the box, Union behaves exactly like Boost.
Union changes nothing until you enable a feature. Admins switch on and configure only the settings they need; Moodle core stays untouched.
Real-time diagnostic checks and setup recommendations.
Dynamic, data-driven page content inside the Union frame.
Union shapes the outer framework — navbars, footers, login screens. Dash brings dynamic, data-driven web design directly into the pages.

Corporate identity
Corporate identity alignment
Brand colors, logos, background images and e-mail branding make Moodle look like the rest of your organisation. The login page gets its own layout and branding.
Workplace
Multi-tenancy for Moodle Workplace
Each tenant gets its own branding through the native Workplace tenant forms, while Workplace navigation and site-wide branding stay intact.
Landing pages
No-code landing pages
Sliders, advertisement tiles, information banners and additional block regions turn site home into a landing page. Together with Dash, pages get dynamic content.
Departments
Departmental layouts with flavours
Flavours give course categories or cohorts their own look, so faculties or business units keep their identity on one shared site.
Tech & compliance
Running it
Requirements
Supports Moodle 4.0–5.2, with a release line per Moodle version. Union is a child theme of Boost. For Moodle Workplace, the Workplace edition is required; it is available through Moodle Premium Partners.
Installation & updates
Install from the Moodle plugins directory like any theme. Out of the box it behaves like Boost; enable features one by one in the theme settings.
Reviewing it
Data protection & hosting
Your data stays in your Moodle. Union runs entirely inside your Moodle site and stores its data in your Moodle database and file storage, on your own server. bdecent does not run a cloud service for it, and the plugin never contacts bdecent: no licence checks, no telemetry, no usage tracking. Access is controlled by Moodle roles and capabilities, so only the people you authorise can see or change it. Union carries Moodle's Privacy friendly award.
Maintainers
Moodle an Hochschulen e.V., ssystems GmbH and Alexander Bias; contributors include lern.link, Luca Bösch, Christian Wolters and bdecent (co-maintainer, Workplace edition).
Accessibility & license
Union is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. It can add an accessibility feedback form and an accessibility statement to every page; both are optional and off by default. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
