Features & pricing
Name, description and hidden surprises for every avatar.
Users explore avatars before selecting them.
Up to 10 progression states that visualize growth.
Each avatar can have up to 10 progression states, so learners see their character develop as they progress.
Icons or badges, assigned via tags, that mark character types.
Icons or badges reflect traits, themes or strengths. Based on tags, they appear in the avatar gallery so users recognize character types at a glance — e.g. a nature dragon among other dragon categories.
Control when avatars appear to learners.
Preserve or restore old avatars without losing user history.
Reusable avatar files for backup or duplication.
Limit avatars by category, cohort, role or time period.
Control availability by course category, cohort, user role or time period, and limit how often users may choose a new avatar. Tags give course creators control over which avatars appear in which activity — so avatars can act as rewards, e.g. after reaching a skill level.
Assign avatars automatically based on user profile fields.
How the avatar activity looks on the course page.
A fallback message when no avatars are visible.
Filter displayed avatars by tags to match course themes.
Access rules for the activity and the avatars inside it.
Decide when and for whom the activity becomes available — e.g. after a skill level, points, previous tasks or a grade. Within the activity, restrict how often avatars can be chosen, for which timeframe or group, or unlock them only through achievements.
Decide when the avatar activity counts as completed.

Reviewing it
Data protection & hosting
Your data stays in your Moodle. Avatar runs entirely inside your Moodle site and stores its data in your Moodle database and file storage, on your own server. bdecent does not run a cloud service for it, and the plugin never contacts bdecent: no licence checks, no telemetry, no usage tracking. Access is controlled by Moodle roles and capabilities, so only the people you authorise can see or change it. Avatar implements Moodle's Privacy API, so its data is included when you export or delete a user's data for GDPR requests.
Accessibility & license
Avatar is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. Avatar images carry the avatar's name as alternative text. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
