Key feature 01 / 03

Playful course entry

A carousel shows each course section as a distinct level with a custom thumbnail, framed by a background image. Sections that are not yet available show a lock symbol.

Key feature 02 / 03

Sections as an interactive canvas

Each section gets its own background image and becomes an interactive canvas. Visual cues show whether a section is unavailable, available or completed, and learners navigate freely on any device.

Key feature 03 / 03

Activities as interactive elements

Activities of all types are represented by images or GIF animations, placed anywhere on the canvas. The visuals change with the activity status. Combined with availability conditions, activities follow a path or appear only once a condition is met.

Everything about Level Maps

Overview

Courses as playful learning worlds

Level Maps is a course format that turns Moodle courses into learning worlds or interactive infographics. The entire course becomes a big canvas: place activities on it as the main characters, or blend them into the scenery as Easter eggs for learners to discover. The design changes with each learner’s progress, and Level Maps adapts to the screen size automatically.

Setup is simple: teachers create their course as usual, and each section later corresponds to a level. Activities are displayed as images positioned via drag and drop. Ready-to-use design packages are available separately in the Design Studio — each with the required images and a fully configured demo course as a Moodle backup. A standard package is free to download — or develop your own designs.

Reviewing it

Data protection & hosting

Your data stays in your Moodle. Level Maps runs entirely inside your Moodle site and stores its data in your Moodle database and file storage, on your own server. bdecent does not run a cloud service for it, and the plugin never contacts bdecent: no licence checks, no telemetry, no usage tracking. Access is controlled by Moodle roles and capabilities, so only the people you authorise can see or change it. Level Maps stores no personal data (declared through Moodle's Privacy API).

Accessibility & license

Level Maps is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. Levels and activities get generated alternative texts; decorative images are marked as such. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
