More than completion and badges
Skills is the right choice if tracking completion and awarding badges is not enough, but you don’t want to deal with Moodle’s competency system.
Everything about Skills
Overview
Visible skill levels for every learner
Skills lets organisations define, track and visualise the skill levels of their learners in Moodle. Points and level milestones make progress tangible, without the configuration effort of Moodle’s competency frameworks.
Administrators create skills with up to 10 levels and make them available site-wide or for specific course categories. Teachers enable them in their course and decide what course completion awards; with Pro, also per activity. Learners follow their progress on their profile page.

Motivation

-
Assessment
Monitor skill levels
With Pro, a report source for Moodle’s report builder shows who reached which level and where skills are used, for skill gap analyses across courses.
-
Adaptive
Paths by skill level
With Pro, activities and sections unlock once learners reach a skill level or a number of points.
Features & pricing
Up to 10 levels per skill – or none, collecting points only.
New in 1.3: skills without levels, collecting points only.
Create skills site-wide with up to 10 levels, starting at level 0, each tied to a number of points. Make them available globally or only in specific course categories.
A colour for each skill and level, and an image per level.
New in 1.3: give skills and levels a colour, and each level its own image.
Assign colours and images to skills and levels so they are visually distinct. How a skill appears in Dash widgets is also set here. Free level image packages are available in the Design studio.

Remove skills temporarily or archive them.
Active and archived skills are managed in one overview in the site administration.
Level in colour and image, points out of the total and a breakdown by course – with a setting for what learners see.
New in 1.3: a redesigned Skills section, and a setting to show skills with courses and activities, totals only, or nothing.
Learners see each skill they have earned and the points still needed for the next level on their profile page.
Points of everyone who holds a skill – for managers, or for learners if granted.
From their profile, learners open a table for each skill listing everyone else who has earned it, with their points. It gives an overview of how peers are progressing in the same skill.
Add or deduct points, set or force a level.
On course completion: award points, deduct points, set a level (a minimum — learners already at or above it keep their level) or force a level (this can also lower it).
The same awarding options per activity.
Award or deduct points, award points by grade, set a level or force a level when learners complete an activity. Available for skills that are enabled in the course.
Skill points based on the activity grade.
Awards skill points based on the grade a learner receives in the activity, instead of a fixed number.
Where skills are used, how they are set up, and statistics.
A Skills report source for Moodle’s report builder: name, key, status and maximum per skill, how many courses use it and how many users have points or are proficient. Combines with standard user, cohort, course and activity data.
Each learner’s points, proficiency and activity completion.
Points earned, proficiency and percentage per learner and skill, together with activity completion across courses. Filters include relative role users and users in the same cohort.
Reduce points over time by calendar days, weeks, months or years – for everyone, a cohort or a single user.
New in 1.3: calendar durations in the learner's time zone, named rules, and upcoming decay on the learner's profile.
Rules reduce skill points on a fixed date, once after a period, or repeatedly by a percentage or a fixed amount. They apply to everyone holding a skill, to a cohort or to a single user; user rules take precedence over cohort rules, cohort rules over rules for everyone.
Upcoming decay events, visible in advance.
Saving a rule plans the upcoming decay events into a queue that administrators can inspect in advance. New awards and cohort changes re-plan it automatically; a scheduled task fires the events that are due.
Remove points immediately, with an audit trail.
Remove points right away from everyone holding a skill, a cohort or a single user, for example after a mistaken award. Each deduction is logged with the acting administrator.
Report, chart and report builder source.
A report, a chart and a report builder source show what has decayed. Visible to administrators, course teachers and mentors.
Fixed or relative deadlines, progress recorded for every member.
New in 1.3.
A report builder source and target pills on the learner's profile.
New in 1.3.

Running it
Requirements
Moodle 4.5 to 5.3 (Skills 1.3). Developed and tested on the Boost theme; Boost child themes and Classic should work, other themes are not supported. The upcoming skill decay needs Moodle cron.
Installation & updates
An admin tool plugin, plus an optional availability plugin for skill-based access restrictions. Pro features come as add-ons in the Skills bundle. Installed as described in the installation guide.
Reviewing it
Data protection & hosting
Skills stores each learner’s points per skill and a log of how they were awarded, in your Moodle database. Full support for Moodle’s privacy API: data is exported and deleted through the standard data requests.
Accessibility & license
Skills is built with Moodle's own template system and the Bootstrap components of Moodle's standard theme Boost, so it follows your theme's colours and fonts. Ships with an English language pack; translations via AMOS. We have not published a formal WCAG audit yet — if something gets in your way, tell us and we will fix it. Released under GPLv3, like Moodle itself.
